When morality and self-interest come into conflict, we devise ingenuous solutions, one of which is to “outsource” immoral yet expedient conduct to others. Engaging in unethical behavior ourselves damages our sense of self, but when we do it through a third party—especially one viewed as a legitimate leader—it doesn’t feel nearly as bad.
