The best chief executives are more concerned about their contribution than their reward. We are in the middle of another shareholder uprising against excessive chief executive pay, possibly more substantial than that of four years ago. Remuneration committees are struggling to balance the need to retain effective leaders with the reasonable expectations of shareholders. It is all a bit of a mess. Even the cautious Investment Association admits boardroom pay systems are broken.
