The Portuguese boss of Britain’s biggest savings bank has been subjected to a humiliating inquisition by its chairman after claims that he spent thousands of pounds on a five-star business trip during which he spent time with an alleged lover. Lord Blackwell, 64, the Conservative peer and chairman of Lloyds Banking Group, contacted António Horta-Osório, 52, the bank’s chief executive, yesterday to confront him over allegations that he had enjoyed a tryst with Wendy Piatt, a former adviser to Tony Blair, on a trip to Singapore in June.
