Boards cannot claim that they did not know the rules have been changed. They are obliged to make sure they are up to date with the latest regulatory or legislative moves. They have to put in place structures which ensure information flows through to them at the right time. Not for them the excuse of nonchalance and inattention to detail of Team Sharapova. Of course, the temptation for boards will be to turn a blind eye to the rules, or to try and interpret them in a way that suits them.
