We are now being bombarded by our political candidates claiming that they have the answers to save our economic system and restore it to its original purpose. Have any of them really examined what that even means? As students of economics, we were taught that most corporations’ goals are to maximize the corporations’ worth for its shareholders. Where does that leave the rest of us “mere mortals” in the world? I was a student of the Milton Friedman doctrine in the 1970’s. We soaked up his words and frankly Corporate America did, as well. “Maximize profits for the shareholders” was the mantra. If the individual stockholder wanted to give some of their money to social causes, it was their job, not the job of the corporation who had been entrusted with others money and who had a single purpose.
